The Government Accountability Office (GAO) issues the Standards for Internal Control in the Federal Government—a.k.a., the "Green Book."

The 2025 Green Book is effective starting FY 2026. Early implementation is allowed. Among the updates, was an  emphasis on preventive control activities and management’s responsibility for internal control at all levels.
